Application Process
Why apply with East Coast Apprenticeships?
East Coast currently employs over 500 apprentices and trainees and has more than 2000 active host employers. If you return from working with your Host Employer, your East Coast Field Officer will attempt to place you with another Host.With East Coast, you have the opportunity of placement with several Hosts throughout your apprenticeship giving you a wide set of skills at completion and you will have access to contacts in your industry!When you commence employment with East Coast you will be officially signed up into your apprenticeship / traineeship with a training contract that is recognised by the Government.
How does East Coast Apprenticeships select Apprentices & Trainees?
East Coast is looking for applicants who have the following values:
- A good attitude
- A positive work ethic
- Trustworthy and reliable
Other aspects of your application may also be taken into consideration, depending on trade requirements, including:
Showing a genuine interest and have done research into your chosen trades.
A car and licence – some trades and host employers require that their apprentices have access to their own transport to, from and in between job sites or work.
Trade experience – if you have some trade experience then you may have a better understanding of that trade and what to expect.
A Construction White Card – Construction Industry workers in Australia must have a Construction Induction White Card BEFORE working on a construction site. You can get this through training organisations or online.
What does it cost to be signed by East Coast?
There are no costs involved in being employed as an East Coast apprentice / trainee, however any student fees that apply to complete College are your responsibility throughout your apprenticeship.
How do I apply for an apprenticeship or traineeship?
To apply for an apprenticeship or traineeship, visit the Apply Now page. You will be asked for your preferred trades, please refer to links.
Applying for a Current Vacancy? In your application quote the “VACANCY REF #”.
Applying online is mobile friendly but you will need to submit a resume. If you don’t have access to your resume on your mobile at the time of application, please send your resume to [email protected].
How does the application process work?
After completing an online application, suitable applicants are contacted to complete literacy and numeracy testing and schedule an interview. Your application is kept active for up to 6 months. If your details or preferences change during this time, please contact [email protected]
How long does the application process usually take?
Each application is different and can vary depending on industry availability. Applicants who have applied and been successful in the interview process have been known to start as early as that week! Make sure to complete an online application to get this process started.
What if there are no vacancies currently available?

We take care of all the paperwork so you can focus on your business and passing on your skills to your apprentice or trainee.
You will have personalised direct contact with our experienced Field Officers and staff who provide professional service.
If you are unable to keep your apprentice in work, we will endeavour to place them with another Host Employer so they can continue their apprenticeship uninterrupted.

What is Group Training?
East Coast Apprenticeships employs apprentices and trainees, placing them with “Host Employers” who provide training and experience in their chosen trade.
East Coast manage the apprentice / trainees’ College bookings, wages, employment and training contracts and provide support and guidance for our Hosts and apprentices.
For our all-inclusive service, East Coast charges an hourly rate which covers the apprentice / trainees’ wage and costs covering:
Superannuation, Annual Leave, Sick/Bereavement Leave, Leave Loading, Public Holidays, Workers Compensation, Tool Allowance, Tax, College Attendance and more
This hourly rate only needs to be paid when the apprentice is at work.
Apprentices can be employed for weeks, months or years. At East Coast, we seek a genuine commitment to train apprentices and trainees and usually expect Host Employers to engage with their apprentice / trainee for a reasonable period to facilitate training.
Do you do Labour Hire?
No, East Coast is not a Labour Hire company and does not provide workers in that capacity. We seek to place apprentices / trainees with Host Employers who will ‘cement’ the on-the-job training opportunities in accordance with Training Plans.
How does East Coast Apprenticeships select Apprentices / Trainees?
Our number one priority when looking for a suitable apprentice or trainee is their attitude and their willingness to work, listen and learn!
Applicants can be selected from our database or from your own shortlist.
All successful applicants undergo assessments and a series of interviews.
As the Host Employer, you are also invited to conduct a final interview / assessment before the commencement of the apprentice / trainee’s employment.
As a base for our potential construction apprentices we would expect them to have a car, licence and Construction White Card.
We can provide the right apprentice or trainee for your business, so make sure to let us know what you are looking for, including:
- Year Level and Trade
- Current Experience
- Ideal Location
- Any other requirements for the position
Can you tell me how much it costs to host an apprentice or trainee?
The cost to host an apprentice or trainee will depend on the relevant industry award, allowances and year level. East Coast has formulated costing sheets for every industry which are available upon enquiry.
Contact your nearest East Coast Branch to speak to one of our Field Officers, or complete an Host Enquiry Form online.
What happens if I am unable to retain the apprentice?
Simply provide your Field Officer at least two working days’ notice if you are in the Construction industry or ten working days’ notice for all other industries and we will seek to place the apprentice / trainee with another Host Employer.
Will my Field Officer assist me if there are issues with my apprentice / trainee?
Your Field Officer is there to help with any concerns you may have about your apprentice / trainee’s performance or behaviour. Our Field Officers have previous industry knowledge / experience and understand the expectations, pressures and time constraints of the industry.
If you have any questions, contact your Field Officer ASAP.

I haven’t been paid what do I do?
If you have completed and submitted a timesheet by 9am Monday and you have not received your pay, follow these steps and check the following:
If submitted via email, you have received a confirmation receipt.
- Your email sent.
- Your timesheet was attached.
- Your timesheet was legible, clear and completed with all correct details.
- You and your Host/College have signed your timesheet.
If still unresolved contact the finance department on (07) 3881 3166.
Timesheets received after 9:00am on the Monday of the pay week will not be processed in that pay run.
Note: Pay weeks and Public Holidays can be found on the white slip at the front of your timesheet book. Public Holidays may delay processing times.
When should I contact my field officer?
It is your responsibility to inform your Field Officer when:
You can’t work or go to College (includes Inclement / wet weather days for Construction)
You can’t get your timesheet signed
Your Host says there’s no more work for you
You have a car accident, work injury or near miss
You have serious concerns regarding safety, bullying or harassment
You missed a call, text or email from East Coast
Any time you have concerns or questions regarding your apprenticeship / traineeship.
What do I do if I get hurt at work?
Tell your supervisor immediately and follow medical advice. Tell your Field Officer ASAP. If you see a doctor, ask for a Worker’s Compensation Medical Certificate (WCMC).
I’ve run out of pages in my timesheet book, how do I get a new one?
Contact your Field Officer when the pages in your timesheet book are getting low so they can supply you with a new one OR you can also visit your local East Coast branch to pick up a new timesheet book.

What do I do if I am sick?
If you are sick the first thing you need to do is let your host employer or College know ASAP. You must then advise your Field Officer. You must provide a medical certificate if you are sick for more than two days OR before/ after a public holiday.
Where can I get a Leave Application Form?
You can get a Leave Application Form from the website, your Field Officer or from an ECA branch.
Who do I talk to if I see something unsafe (hazard) at work?
Report all hazards to your Supervisor / Host immediately. Workplace hazards must be addressed before work can continue safely. Contact your Field Officer if the hazard remains.
What do I do if my PPE is not fit for use (eg badly scratched safety glasses)?
It is your responsibility to be fit for work, including your PPE. If you are on site, report to your supervisor or host employer that your PPE is not fit for use and you require a replacement (eg scratched safety glasses). DO NOT begin working without the required PPE.
Contact your Field Officer to discuss replacements for any PPE that East Coast initially issued to you.
