Outstanding performance - "Fitz Blitz" in 16 hours
Every now and then something special touches our lives. I believe the “Fitz Blitz” project is one such event. The culmination of a lot of hard work and ingenuity by our Construction Team joined by other staff members in late January saw the essential completion of the “Fitz Blitz” facility. This mammoth effort of hard and challenging physical trade work was nothing short of amazing. It is all the more incredible because the work pressure was extreme and at times dangerous but it was carried out safely and without accident. In this regard, the efforts of John Young our WHSO who was on guard throughout and monitored the safety of all on site, while still ‘mucking in’ to help others is acknowledged.
For our apprentices who worked on “Fitz Blitz”; this was truly their day. They worked relentlessly; their efforts shone throughout the day and they were duly commended by the Minister and all others.
A special thanks to everyone who was involved and particularly three outstanding performers, our Construction Manager, James Keightley whose experience and strength of leadership was always evident, Tim Stephens for his incredible efforts of managing the project and the apprentices, and Robyn Thomson for her tireless role in support and arrangements, coordination and hands on effort throughout this time I wish to acknowledge and thank Steve Collins and Peter Higgins, both lead the apprentice teams under the watchful eyes of James and Tim. I thank everyone else who played a role turning up just to give a hand. This includes our local Federal Member Yvette D’Ath, MP along with Emma and Cameron D’Ath, Trudy Collins, Sandra Harrison, Peter Leaver, Brian Evison, Denis Reid, and Annie Gillespie.
I would like to acknowledge ULDA for creating this opportunity and having confidence in East Coast to deliver. Ian Purssey was instrumental in supporting and working with this venture every step of the way, and I extend to Ian personal thanks for supporting our efforts as we worked together. I would like to extend a special thanks to Sam Dryhurst, who managed this project on ULDA’s behalf throughout and on the day controlled and directed over 50 crane lifts safely and did an outstanding role helping in many other areas.
Over 4440 training hours have been achieved on this project of excellent apprentice carpentry training. Only when you view the two buildings in their landscaped setting and realize that this was achieved in only 16 working hours on site do you grasp the enormity of the challenge and the result.
I would also like to acknowledge those who kept working on the transfer of BIGA apprentices, TOP and kept the offices moving on every other task we have.
I have never been prouder of an East Coast team effort supported by our colleagues at ULDA, our sub-contractors and suppliers.
