In late July, East Coast Apprenticeships’ plumbing apprentice, Andrew Hanifin from Bald Hills won the North Brisbane Region Apprentice of the Year Award. Andrew goes on to the Queensland Training Awards State Finals in September to compete for the State Title. For what is believed a first in Queensland, East Coast apprentices held two of the three finalist spots at this year’s Awards. Andrew and Zachary Shield won the final spots from a large field of apprentices and both were proud winners on the night. ‘After finishing Year 12, trying a few different careers and finally finding inspiration in fellow trades people within his family, Andrew embraced every aspect of his plumbing apprenticeship—and even enjoyed digging trenches for the first six months. Boasting a full attendance and pass rate for his theoretical studies, Andrew believes his thorough practical experiences have provided a solid career grounding. As a Salvation Army volunteer, he is also studying small business and hopes to one day start his own enterprise.’ - extract from Awards Program.
